History of the

CHICKPEA

The Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) is a legume of the family Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae. It is also known as a garbanzo bean, and sometimes known as Egyptian pea.

Cultivated in 3000BC

Chickpeas originated in the region of the middle east as much as 7000 years ago.

Ancient Egypt

Chickpeas were so highly valued in ancient Egypt some were even found buried in the tombs of the ancient Pharaohs.

Classical Greece

It then made its way to classical Greece where it was eaten as a staple, made into dessert or consumed raw when young.

Ancient Rome

When the Romans discovered Chickpeas, or Cicer as it was called in latin, the name of incredible grain would eventually become known as it is today.

16th Century

In the 16th century it was brought to the new world by both the Spaniards and the Portuguese.
